Silly America Pit Stop – March 16, 2009

Starting today we’re welcoming a new feature here on Silly America — Pit Stop. This is a chance for me to take a break from my normal postings and feature news about roadside attractions, odd events, crazy happenings, and silly things from the U.S.A. and around the world!
Here are this week’s Pit Stop features:
A Colonel Sanders statue was pulled from river in Japan after 24 years
The World’s Biggest Birthday Barbie Cake was unveiled in Australia
A fire guts Totonno’s, the legendary Coney Island pizzeria
Pat “Deep Dish” Bertoletti wins a the Stroehmann Sandwich Slamm corned beef on rye, eating championship by downing 16 3/4 sandwiches in 10 minutes
Alliance proposes establishing Route 66 national monument
And I can’t help but share this amazing map I came across today by illustrator Linzie Hunter

I just love it!
