“Down Under” at Pike Place Market is an awesomely weird museum: The World Famous Giant Shoe Museum! More a storefront pedial peep show than actual museum, for mere quarters you can get a glimpse of some of the largest shoes in the world!

Viewable exhibits include the “World’s Largest Collection of Giant Shoes,” “The Greatest Shoe on Earth,” a “Real Clown Shoe,” and a shoe belonging to Robert Wadlow, the world’s tallest man.

Designed and built by graphic artist Sven Sundbaum, the exhibit also pays homage to a giant shoe left by Wadlow at a local business that was “lost” many years ago and offers a one thousand dollar reward for its return.

Pike Place Market – Pigs on Parade

In 2001 and again in 2007 Rachel the Pig served as inspiration for a “Pigs on Parade” fundraiser of decorated swines across the city. While in and outside of Pike Place I noticed a couple of other pigs that I believe were part of that fundraising effort!

Pike Place Market – Rachel the Pig

Pike Place Market has so many specialty food, meat, and produce shops along with restaurants that it would be easy to pig out. But one of the must sees while there is actually a pig!

A 550-pound bronze cast piggy bank sits under the “Public Market Center” sign in the Market. The pig, names Rachel, has served as an unofficial mascot of Pike Place since 1986. Rachel was modeled by local artist Georgia Gerber after a real pig named Rachel.

Besides being a mascot and photo op for tourists, Rachel also is a real piggy bank and collects money for the Market Foundation to fund the Market’s social services. Each year she collects between $6,000 and $9,000 in currencies from around the world.
