Whew! I am EXHAUSTED! Well, actually I am semi-well rested now that I finally got a full night’s sleep (and accidentaly overslept on my alarm for about an hour this morning…oops)! More about my crazy road trip to Krystals later this week, for now let’s catch up on another competititve eating event – the La Costena Jalapeno Eating Contest!
This year’s contest was crazy! It was a pretty decent-sized crowd and there were lots of great posters cheering on the favorites. The contest was exhilarating…so fast pace as competitors stuffed their mouths with the big green peppers. I don’t know how they did it! I am not a spicy-girl so I certainly wouldn’t have gotten far at all! In the end, as the tallying of totals began there was a buzz in the crowd. It seemed as if first place was a tie.
Patrick “Deep Dish” Bertoletti (the number two ranked eater in the world) was the defending champion and Sonya “the Black Widow” Thomas was out for a win — so there was much tension when they announced there would be a one-minute overtime battle. More plates of peppers were placed in front of them and the eat-off began! It looked close, but Sonya’s technique seemed to be dead-on. She managed to shovel more into her mouth, and in the end was declared the winner!
It was a crazy day! They handed out medals and bottles of Pepto Bismol to the winners. I loved the Pepto Bismol. Awesome.

Before my renegade road trip to the Krystal Square Off I wanted to share with you the rest of the videos from Krystal! These are more of the competitors you can expect to see on Sunday! Don’t forget that you can watch the entire thing broadcast live on your computer (and look for me in the press pit!)! Or if you are in the area (or want to take the trip!) come out to Ross’ Landing in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Sunday! The contest starts at 2pm and the festivities start at noon!

My plan for the weekend is sort of finally coming together…
My boss graciously gave me Monday off even though it’s one of the biggest work days of the year.
Fellow bloggers the HungrySisters graciously offered up their hotel room for me to sleep in.
My friend graciously offered to maybe drive up with me if his schedule permits.
Krystal graciously has let me be official press so I will be covering the event from the press pit!

I am so excited for this weekend! We’re only four days away from one of the biggest, baddest competitive eating events of the year: the Krystal Square Off! Since 2004, competitions have gathered to try and eat as many of the little square burgers as possible, and this year I will be making the trek to Chattanooga to witness the event for the third year in a row!
Competitive eating is pretty addictive. Once you see an event live you just can’t go back to watching it on TV. Not to mention the fact that it will be televised on SportSouth , a channel that (surprisingly) is not included in basic cable in the Midwest. Now…I have to work in Chicago until about 10pm the night before…and Chattanooga is about a ten hour drive away…and there are no convenient (or affordable) planes, trains, or buses to get me there! So what’s a girl to do? A renegade road trip! Normally on road trips I like to take as much time as possible to tour around and make stops…and while I am a full proponent of the journey being as important as the destination, sometimes the destination is really all that matters! Especially when you have to drive through the night!
I’m so pumped for the the trip though, so to get even MORE pumped, this week I will be featuring photos from last year’s Square Off!

In late 2007 I started Silly America. I had always loved roadside attractions and as I started traveling more, and taking road trips, and going to competitive eating events, I started to amass a huge collection of photos. I wanted to share my passions with the world and thought creating a website devoted to all of these weird American places would be an amazing endeavor. My intention for the website was never for it to be a blog. I had intended more for it to be a massive photo gallery of all the attractions you could fathom (or at least the ones I have traveled to thus far). But, as always, life seemed to get in the way, and I had never actually got around to designing the site. So for two years it was a lonely little blog that I neglected for a long while.

But now, I am proud to announce the new Silly America website!
We now offer the best of both worlds: this here blog AND a massive gallery of photos! They are organized by state, but you can also search or use the tags to find more! You can even leave comments directly for each photo! It’s not totally done yet, and I still have to add another thousand or so photos and caption all four thousand of them, but I am so happy with it!
There is also a section devoted to videos and an about section to learn more about the site, me, our Silly American mascot Flopsy, and more!
Thank you so much to everyone who has helped along the way. I hope everyone enjoys the new website as much as I enjoy seeking out these crazy sites! As always, there is so much more to come! I can’t wait to hit the road again!
