Carhenge in Alliance, Nebraska

Carhenge, a Stonehenge replica made from cars, in Alliance, Nebraska

We had been driving all day, my friend Emily and I, and it was dark and late and we just wanted to find a hotel in Nebraska. We finally saw a patch of lights and pulled off into Chadron, Nebraska. We got food at a diner and then drove around the town looking for a vacancy.

There were none.

So we kept driving, an hour more, to Alliance, Nebraska. We checked into a Days Inn — they had a free room, all the towels had been used, ice was in the ice bucket, an opened bar of soap was on the bathroom counter, the air conditioner was making strange noises.

But none of that mattered. We had made it all the way to Alliance and we had beds to sleep in and in the morning we were going to our first stop of the day, something so important that even the Days Inn Guide listed it first in the section titled “things to do in the area.”

Carhenge is a replica of Stonehenge made from, well, cars. All of the elements are there — from a circle of upright vehicles to a heel stone — and it mimics the original in size and placement.

Artist Jim Reinders created the attraction in 1987 as a tribute to his father, Herman Reinders. The car art was met with some resistance from the city council, who ordered it torn down. Luckily, other locals formed a Friends of Carhenge alliance to save it from destruction.

UMR Stonehenge Replica in Rolla, Missouri

UMR Stonehenge Replica in Rolla, Missouri

Dubbed “Stubby Stonehenge” by some, this replica at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly University of Missouri-Rolla) campus is half the size of the ancient original.

Work began on this structure in 1982 and the stone — 160 tons of Georgia granite — was acquired in 1983. Each piece was crafted by waterjet equipment from the University. Work on this partial-recreation of Stonehenge finished in 1984 and was dedicated on June 20 of that year.

Foamhenge in Natural Bridge, Virginia

Can’t make it to England to see Stonehenge? Did you know you can see the next best thing in Virginia?

While the druids crafted their grounds from stone, Mark Cline of Enchanted Castle Studio took a different approach in Natural Bridge, Virginia: Foam.

Sneak Peek of the Week: Stonehenge!

I’ve never been to Stonehenge. I’ve never even been to England for that matter.

Stonehenge

Basically Stonehenge is a whole bunch of giant upright stones constructed about 5,000 years ago. I’m really no expert in the matter of who, what, where, and when so I will leave it at that. Just know that it seems to be a pretty impressive…and pretty impressive…structure. And one of those things that tourists from around the globe will flock to to see!

Stonehenge

If you’ve never made it to England have no fear, there are plenty of reproductions stateside for the silly American traveler…and for the rest of the week I’ll be showcasing some of my favorite Stonehenge look-a-likes!

Stay tuned…
