I couldn’t find much info on this little…err…big guy in British Columbia that we took a quick pit stop for on our drive to Hyder. What I do know is it’s a giant marmot that seems to have stolen himself a mug of beer. Or maybe it’s hot chocolate if he’s underage.

I do know, from the signs in the background, that he seems to be in or near 100 Mile House, BC.

And I do know, based on the marmots that were running around the grounds, that this monument was rightfully erected.

Canadians love their roadside attractions (I’d venture to guess even more so than Americans). A few years back they even released a set of postage stamps commemorating some of their favorites.
Amongst those honored was Mr. PG.

This giant wooden man in a yellow hat stands at 8.138 meters high…don’t even ask me how tall that is I’m rusty on my metric system…and is a source of pride for his home of Prince George. He even has almost 5,000 Facebook fans! And if that’s not celebrity status, I don’t know what is!

I spent my weekend holed up at home working on some website tweaks. Like it???
I wanted to spruce up some around here in anticipation of the Travel Blog Exchange (TBEX) conference coming up this weekend in Vancouver! This trip will only be the second time in my life I’ve gone up to Canada. The first was a few years back on our road trip to Hyder, Alaska (the only community in southern Alaska accessible by road).
So what better way to get ready than to reminisce about some of the awesometacular roadside attractions I saw while driving through?!?!
Now, fair warning, our road trip mission on that particular occasion was solely to make the twenty hour trip there and twenty hour trip back, so there wasn’t much time for stops…so my blurry images won’t really be doing much justice to the roadside landscape of our neighbors to the north.
And even when we had time to stop sometimes things just didn’t go our way…like how we had all been looking forward to a stop at the Toaster Museum in Stewart (Hyder’s Canadian sister city). But alas, it wasn’t open when we rolled in. So instead we got some photos with a polar bear across the street and had some amazing fish and chips at a restaurant that Robin Williams ate at when he filmed a movie in town!
We adopted a mantra on that trip: “next time.” So, who knows, maybe some day I will find myself again driving twenty hours from Seattle and ending up in a remote northern Canadian town to see me some toasters. But I think next weekend I’ll stick to Vancouver.

I’ll be bringing you a different Silly Canadian roadside attraction each day this week so stay tuned!
