Baconfest Chicago

If you know me, you know one thing. I like bacon. A lot. I even once made bacon brownies. They were delicious.

So, of course, when I heard about Baconfest Chicago there was no way I wasn’t going to go.

The day was split up into two shifts and my friends and I chose to go to the second shift: a bacon extravaganza lasting from 3pm to 6pm on Saturday. We got there slightly before three, were handed a bacon lollipop and went to check out the bacon perfume. Then we headed in further to check out the bacon venders.

There were bacon cookies and bacon popcorn and bacon syrup (to make bacon flavored chocolate milk and Pepsi) and bacon cupcakes (my favorite was the BLT) and bacon belts and bacon donuts and free jars of Baconnaise.

And of course, bacon.

And that was just the first floor!

We headed upstairs for more bacony goodness!

First up was to redeem a drink coupon. I went with a spicy and bacony blood mary.

And then it was on to the main ballroom for bacon-chef-apalooza: twelve area restaurant chefs cooking up the best of the best in bacon dishes…and here’s what we ate!

This one was supposed to be a lyonnais salad with pork belly, but they ran out of salad, and we got the last pieces of bacon Balsan

After bacon, bacon, and more bacon, it was time for, well, more bacon! We had bacon sangria and a bacon vodka and chocolate milk (surprisingly very tasty). And then went back downstairs for more samples and to buy some bacon. I ended up with a pack of Spencer’s Irish Back Bacon which I had sampled and loved because it was a little meatier than I’m used to.

It was an awesome day of bacon awesomeness. And I think I am still in a bacon coma.

Have I used the word “bacon” a record number of times in this post? Yeah, this was a lot even for me! It’s hard to say which dish was my favorite as I quite enjoyed them all. The bacon ice cream was delicious. The Irish breakfast was yummy and I think they win my vote for the fact that I ate something with the term “blood sausage” in the description. I liked Vie’s pork belly. I liked the tacos. I liked Southwater’s dish and I liked the gnocchi…I think I pretty much just liked bacon.

Guinness World Record for Biggest Hamburger

Mallie’s Sports Bar & Grill in Southgate, Michigan isn’t just your typical sports bar. Yes, the game is most certainly on one of many, many, televisions. Yes, they have beer. And yes, they have food…even if that food might be more than you bargained for.
Over anything else Mallie’s is known for their particularly large quantities of food. Amongst their typical selections are a few items that stand out: a colossal Ice Cream Sundae (1.5 gallons of ice cream with the works on top), and a “Ginormous Cookie” that is 20 inches and covered in chocolate chips.
The menu also contains another item: a 10 lb. Monster Burger ($34.99, or free if eaten in under two hours), a 150-pound “Absolutely Ridiculous Burger” that costs $499 or is free if a team of 30 people can finish it in under an hour.
Last year Mallie’s made an official Guinness World Record by creating an outrageous 164.8 pound hamburger. And this weekend they did it again and broke their own record with a 185.6 pound hamburger. The burger was paraded in in a succession of their burger fare. A mini burger came out first, a half-pounder, a double deluxe, their signature ten pound monster…

The crowd gathered around as each burger was escorted to the table with a huge scale on it. In anticipation everyone’s cameras were out. Finally, it was wheeled out: a burger weighing in at over 180 pounds.

It was hoisted onto the scale and the owners were presented with an official letter from Guinness declaring that a world record has been set.

Volo Auto Museum at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show

Don’t you love old cars? The cool colors, the fun lines, the unique angles! Despite all the retro throwbacks that have come on the market in recent years (my absolute favorite being the new Dodge Challenger) they certainly don’t make them like they used to!
Each year at The 2009 Chicago Auto Show (going on NOW until February 22) the Volo Auto Museum sets up a display of some of their collectible cars. While I have yet to make a trek out to the museum itself, their display always provides a unique glimpse into what the museum is all about. Here is a selection of classic cars from their collection this year:

“1914 Ford Model Speedster — Early in the history of the automobile all the cars were open. This one is a custom built speedster. Very sporty and stylish.”

“1936 Auburn Boattail Speedster — a wealthy playboys car of the 1930’s. Note the golf bag door behind the passenger door. Built for the rich and movie stars to drive to country clubs”

“1961 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster — The corvette was created as an economical sports car for young adults. Built in limited numbers.”

“1969 Shelby GT 500 — Very Rare, only 335 built. It was also Carroll Shelby’s favorite. Because government regulations and insurance company’s Carroll Shelby decided to end the Shelby Mustang in the fall of 1969.”
