World’s Largest Amish Horse and Buggy in Mesopotamia, Ohio

If there’s anyone known for their weird kooky bigger than life roadside attractions it’s the Amish, right?

Like this World’s Largest Amish Horse and Buggy!

World's Largest Amish Horse and Buggy

This 32-foot long horse and carriage was designed by Chris McConnell. It’s different than most “world’s largests” out there because this is hand-crafted wood, while a lot of the others are made of fiberglass.

According to a sign attached to this tourist attraction, the giant wooden horse and buggy is made up of 2,300 board feet of lumber and 30 pounds of screws. The wheel size is 7 feet tall and the horse is 29.25 hands tall! Actually, I’m not really sure what a “hand” measurement is, or whose hands they use, or if the Amish have different sized hands then the rest of us, but it was a mighty tall horse!

VA/NC Road Trip: Day 1

Lesson of the day: while I try to be a good driver who follows the rules of the road there are times that I will break those rules. Like when there is a sign that says no passing for the next seven miles and I am behind a guy driving a horse and buggy.

I woke up this morning at 7am, showered, packed up the car, got a large white mocha and hit the road towards Virginia.

My car is ready for a road trip

My first stop of the day was a muffler man outside of an Ace Hardware in Elkhart, Indiana.

A man outside told me that someone tried to steal it once. How the heck does anyone steal something that big?

A couple of hours later I made it to the worlds biggest can of tomato soup outside of the Campbell’s factory in Ohio. There was really nowhere to pull over though and the car behind me was riding my bumper so I had to just admire it from my car window as I drove by.

After that I tracked down an ATM machine that was disguised as a horse and buggy…

And then a giant rocking chair…

…and then passed about 20 actual horse and buggies…

…and then found the world’s LARGEST horse and buggy!

My final stop of the night was to Mars.

Space ship in Mars, Pennsylvania

Mars, Pennsylvania that is!

And now I am sitting in a hotel room just outside of Pittsburgh and eating french fries and chocolate shake.

Great Lakes Brewing Company in Cleveland, Ohio

A few years ago I was in Cleveland, Ohio, and stopped by Great Lakes Brewing Company for a tour! This small operation has been in business since 1988 and sells their beers primarily in the Midwest. The tour is free (samples will technically cost you a quarter though, as the Ohio law forbids them from giving out free alcohol).

Jumbo Hot Dog

So I don’t know if this would actually be considered the world’s largest hot dog, but it’s pretty big…and it comes with fries and a shake…and did I forget to mention that it also flies? OK, so this is most definitely the world’s largest flying hot dog that’s accompanied by fries and a shake. Take that Wienermobile.

Phish's giant hot dog and fries at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

This silly American jumbo-sized meal was original served up by the band Phish. Way back when in 1994 they began a New Years Eve Concert by declaring their hunger and soon after this feast descended upon them. The band members climbed inside (it seats four) and floated out over the audience.

Nowadays the jumbo hot dog et al. are housed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. The Rock Hall itself is filled with a plethora of silly wonders: everything from Michael Jackson’s sparkling glove to Pink Floyd’s wall. Unfortunately the museum doesn’t allow photos, so I can’t share anything from inside, but I was able to snap that one from the balcony of the lobby. I mean, how can you not take a picture of a giant hot dog?
