Silly Krakow – Wawel Dragon

Silly America Abroad

Legend has it that a dragon lived at the foot of Wawel Hill in Krakow, Poland. He was the type of guy who would emerge from his cave to eat sheep and virgins, as dragons often do.

One day a smart villager stuffed a dead sheep with sulphur and put it outside the cave. The dragon quickly ate up his offering, but then got terribly thirsty. So he drank from the river. And drank and drank until he exploded! And the whole town rejoiced and the man then became ruler of the kingdom or married the kings daughter (which I guess is pretty much the same thing) depending on which version of the story you read.

Although the dragon was killed off many moons ago you can still visit him outside Krakow’s Wawal Castle!

The Dragon of Wawel Hill is commemorated in a metal sculpt, created in the 1970s by Bronisław Chromy.

But this ain’t no ordinary dragon statue…it’s a fire-breathing dragon statue!

Every few minutes it breathes fire, leaving a chuckle on tourist children’s mouths and serving as a warning for any sheep or virgins who are passing by.

Silly Krakow – Eros Bendato

Silly America Abroad

Tourists seem to go head over heels for this giant head!

Eros Bendato (Eros bound) is a giant…well…head in the middle of Rynek Główny, the main square in Krakow, Poland!

The bronze noggin was sculpted by Igor Mitoraj in 1999 and moved to Krakow in 2003.

There was never a moment I didn’t see someone taking their photo with it…or inside of it! I just hope its popularity didn’t go to its head!

Silly Warsaw – Pegasus Sculptures

Silly America Abroad

Warsaw wasn’t that silly. I suppose if you were completely destroyed in a war and had to rebuild yourself from the ground up you too would take yourself very seriously.

That said, these multi-colored Pegasus sculptures were pretty silly. The flying horses were created by Beata and Pawel Konarscy and are scattered across the lawn in front of the Biblioteka Narodowa (National Library) in Warsaw, Poland.
