Silly America Year in Travel 2009

2009 has been both an amazing and horrible year for me. While my travels took me from coast to coast and many places in between, I’ve lost someone amazing who was the first person to drive me coast to coast.

Thank you to everyone for your support and understanding over the last few weeks. As we ring in the new year let’s welcome it with joy and hope. I’ll be back to blogging regularly in the new year. Hope everyone has a wonderful celebration whether you are at home or on the road.

For my final treat of the year, I have a special slideshow of all my year’s travel and eating contests featuring, for the first time ever, the full Silly America theme somg by the AMAZING Will Nealy. Enjoy!

Introducing the NEW Silly America!

In late 2007 I started Silly America. I had always loved roadside attractions and as I started traveling more, and taking road trips, and going to competitive eating events, I started to amass a huge collection of photos. I wanted to share my passions with the world and thought creating a website devoted to all of these weird American places would be an amazing endeavor. My intention for the website was never for it to be a blog. I had intended more for it to be a massive photo gallery of all the attractions you could fathom (or at least the ones I have traveled to thus far). But, as always, life seemed to get in the way, and I had never actually got around to designing the site. So for two years it was a lonely little blog that I neglected for a long while.

The Spindle, a roadside attraction in Berwyn, Illinois.

But now, I am proud to announce the new Silly America website!

We now offer the best of both worlds: this here blog AND a massive gallery of photos! They are organized by state, but you can also search or use the tags to find more! You can even leave comments directly for each photo! It’s not totally done yet, and I still have to add another thousand or so photos and caption all four thousand of them, but I am so happy with it!

There is also a section devoted to videos and an about section to learn more about the site, me, our Silly American mascot Flopsy, and more!

Thank you so much to everyone who has helped along the way. I hope everyone enjoys the new website as much as I enjoy seeking out these crazy sites! As always, there is so much more to come! I can’t wait to hit the road again!

Impulsive decisions

Travelers tend to be impulsive.

We hear about a festival three hours away and are compelled to hop in the car and go.

We see that great deal on a flight across the country and can’t help but hit purchase.

And, apparently, we decide, out of nowhere, that our blogging software just isn’t quite doing it for us anymore and, without really thinking, and with certainly no game plan, up and decide to switch…

But travelers also tend to have great instincts for following the correct path…or at least the one that might lead to a greater good.

As you might have noticed, the blog was down pretty much all of yesterday and now looks completely different. And none of the old links work. And I am pretty sure the RSS feed is different. Oops.

But I am hoping that in the long run this switch will do me right. I am pretty much in love with the little link on the bottom of this page that says “Older Posts” because, well, I hate when you can’t just look at posts like that! And for that alone I am happy with my decision already.

So that is change number one out of about fifty bazillion to come. Stay tuned for more surprises and more adventures ahead!
