India is full of trash. Everywhere I go there seem to be piles of trash building up at the sides of the road. It’s difficult almost anywhere to find somewhere to throw your garbage that isn’t just on the ground. There just aren’t many trash cans. But in Kochi, there was a pleasant surprise. Not only are the trash cans that dot the waterfront proclaiming “USE ME” plentiful: they are also shaped like animals!

Many towns in America profess themselves to be a home for white squirrels: pockets of suburbia where these curious creatures seem to congregate.

Olney, Illinois is one of the most boastful. About 200 or so of the tiny mammals currently inhabit the town. At its peak though, there were around 1,000. Every fall the town holds a squirrel count.

It’s a town where squirrels rule: they have the right of way on every street. There’s a fine for taking them out.

I visited Olney on a road trip around Illinois some years ago. My friends and I hit the town’s park and went around looking. We spotted many squirrels of the regular, everyday, brown variety. But, with limited time to devote to the town, we weren’t able to spot one of the famed white furry residents of Olney.

While we didn’t spot any white squirrels, we saw many regular squirrels…

Chillicothe, Missouri is the “Home of Sliced Bread.” It’s the town where the one intention every other invention has to live up to was first sold.

The Rohwedder Bread Slicer was first put into use there by the Chillicothe Baking Company in 1928. Before that all bread was…gasp…cut by hand! Can you imagine?
