Moose (W-02-03)

Chicago’s Michigan Avenue isn’t considered the “Magnificent Mile” for nothing. A stretch along the street plays home to shops galore, restaurants, skyscrapers, and river views that keep tourists coming back. But alongside business and pleasure there is a wacky side to the street that showcases some of the silliest sites Chicago has to offer.

Yesterday I presented the Jack Brickhouse Statue and today we’ll meet his neighbor, a large, chrome, antlered moose!

The sculpture, titled “Moose (W-02-03),” has stood proudly across from the Wrigley Building since 2006.

The artwork was created by artist John Kearney between 2002 and 2003 and was part of the Chicago Cultural Center’s Artists & Automobiles event. Between June and October public art displays featuring works made from recycled car parts. This moose sculpture was made from chrome bumpers and survived past the program, still watching guard over the Mag Mile today.

Pike Place Market – Pigs on Parade

In 2001 and again in 2007 Rachel the Pig served as inspiration for a “Pigs on Parade” fundraiser of decorated swines across the city. While in and outside of Pike Place I noticed a couple of other pigs that I believe were part of that fundraising effort!

Pike Place Market – Rachel the Pig

Pike Place Market has so many specialty food, meat, and produce shops along with restaurants that it would be easy to pig out. But one of the must sees while there is actually a pig!

A 550-pound bronze cast piggy bank sits under the “Public Market Center” sign in the Market. The pig, names Rachel, has served as an unofficial mascot of Pike Place since 1986. Rachel was modeled by local artist Georgia Gerber after a real pig named Rachel.

Besides being a mascot and photo op for tourists, Rachel also is a real piggy bank and collects money for the Market Foundation to fund the Market’s social services. Each year she collects between $6,000 and $9,000 in currencies from around the world.

2009 Crazy Stupid Vacation – Day 8 – Seattle

Wednesday, July 1, 2009

Most of the time while on vacations I am a gogogo person who likes to see everything and do everything humanly possible…but sometimes after a long 7 days of vacation and a lot of stress at work and home a girl just needs to have a lazy day!

The day started out with a trip to the Woodland Park Zoo. It’s a really nice zoo and there are lots of exhibits. My favorite was the adorable red panda (who unfortunately was sleeping in a tree, but was cute nonetheless) and the orangutan who seemed to have dressed himself up like a Star Wars Jedi…

After a few hours of wandering I headed back and chilled with my friend Scott. We got some Pho for dinner and later got some Starbucks (it started in Seattle, so it totally is local…) and spent a pretty quiet night in. A good relaxing night to end off the first…uh second…no, third…part of my trip.

Tomorrow morning I leave Seattle for New York City!
