While I do like to focus on the weird and wacky of the world, you always have to stop and appreciate the sheer beauty of it too. Here are some photos of the view of the Mississippi River from the Elzie C. Segar Memorial Park in Chester, IL.

Popeye Statue in Chester, IL
I’m Popeye the Sailor Man,
I’m Popeye the Sailor Man.
I’m strong to the finich
Cause I eats me spinach.
I’m Popeye the Sailor Man.
In 1977 a memorial to the beloved cartoon character Popeye was erected in Chester, Illinois, birthplace of the comic’s creator Elzie C. Segar. The “Home of Popeye” still proudly displays this six-foot, 900 lb. bronze statue of Popeye the Sailor Man in Segar Memorial Park, overlooking the Mississippi River.

Wimpy Photo Op
You know those things where there is a picture of a character of some sort and the face is cut out so you can take a picture with your face in place of the character’s face? I tried figuring out if there was an official name for those things but couldn’t find it. In any case, there is one of Wimpy in Chester underneath the Popeye mural! You can’t not take a picture with it!
p.s. That’s the friend Joe’s head! (I swear he’s not unhappy, he just always makes faces like that.

Popeye Mural
Chester, Illinois celebrates all things Popeye. It’s Elzie Crisler Segar, the cartoon creator’s, home town. In fact, many of the characters were based on residents. In Gazebo Park (where the Wimpy statue lives) their dedication to the sailor man and his friends shows in this lovely mural of the cast of characters on the side of a building.
