Flopsy’s Day Off

I had a hard decision to make when I left on my ’round the world trip. Do I take my beloved jackalope, and Silly America’s mascot, Flopsy? Or, do I leave him behind?

In the end I decided that Flopsy would be better off at home. On road trips he mostly stays in the car except to come out to see roadside attractions and the like. But traveling through Europe he’d have to endure time in my backpack and numerous hostels and trains and planes and buses. The risk of him getting lost was just too high. And, besides, he’d have to spend a heck of lot of time in quarantine to even be allowed into some of these countries!

So, alas, I left poor Flopsy behind. He’s been doing fine, keeping busy with his friend Goat the monkey. They invented a game called “play with this piece of green string.” But Goat is a homebody, and Flopsy likes to see America.

So sometimes when the cat is away the Jackalope will play, and Flopsy took off this weekend for a road trip to Milwaukee. And boy did he have a good time…

Safe House : Milwaukee Spy-Themed Restaurant

You’re in Milwaukee and walking down a nondescript alley.

Safe House, a spy-themed restaurant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

You come across a plaque for an importer/exporter business.

International Exports Ltd sign outside of the Safe House, a spy-themed restaurant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

It’s something you wouldn’t normally pay attention to, but for some reason you are drawn to check it out. So you open the door and peak inside.

A woman greets you and opens the red velvet rope to let you into a small waiting area. She asks you for the password.

No sure what to do you exchange glances with your companions.

“You don’t have a password?” she asks. No, no you don’t.

“Well then,” she says, “you’re going to have to work to get in.” At that point she tells you that you have to waddle like a penguin for thirty seconds. And you do. And after the thirty seconds is up a wall slides open to reveal a whole other room, and you step inside.

Where are you? Is this crazy place really and importer/exporter or something else?

Well, if you happen to happen upon the situation above, have no fear, you’ve made it to none other than Safe House.

Safe House is a secret refuge for spies engaging in covert operations…or, maybe a restaurant.

Like any restaurant you get to eat. I highly recommend Great Texas Cover-up Spyburger.

But unlike most restaurants, there is a spy theme at every turn! From real memorabilia to James Bond posters the place is packed on every inch with a spy-theme.

My favs included this sign on a bathroom stall…

And a little nook to look in that showed a video of you!

In order to get out you enter a little room with a payphone and feed it a quarter. The phone gives you a password to enter and once you have the wall opens and you are free to leave down a dark corridor.

But it’s always nice to know that if you’re on a super secret spy mission in Milwaukee, you have a place to be safe.

Brewers Game at Miller Park

After the Jelly Belly Factory Tour on Saturday, we took off for destination number 2: Miller Park!

Brewers game at Millers Park in Milwaukee.

We were taking in a Brewers pre-season game (with tickets behind home plate for only $10, why not?) I really like Miller Park. Why? They have a dome. And on a rainy chilly day like Saturday that dome made the game awesome.

I got a hot dog (of course) and cheese curds instead of my usual nachos. When in Wisconsin…

Someone asked a girl to prom on the big board…

But he didn’t leave a name. So what if the wrong girl saw it? Or what if she was there with two guys?

And sausages raced!

And we stretched!

And we sang about a barrel but there was no barrel :(

The game was actually pretty awesome because in the 9th inning the Brewers were down…but then they came back to win it! Although we were hoping for a tie.

Not that I really care, because I’m a White Sox fan. But, as a friend of mine would put it: “I cheer for whoever I’m in the audience for.” Or, as a normal person would put it: “I cheer for the home team.” And it’s always exciting to see the home team win!

Jelly Belly Center Tour

Saturday morning I was picked up bright and early and we shuffled off to Wisconsin. We had a full day ahead of Milwaukee-area goodness and I couldn’t wait!

Our first stop was Pleasant Prairie and the home of everyone’s favorite jelly bean: the Jelly Belly!

The day was a little rainy, but we got photos of the giant bean and the the VW bug and then waited in line.

Once inside we hopped on a little tram for a tour of the warehouse and video presentation of how Jelly Bellys come to be!

The tour is short, and you can’t take photos, but definitely worth the free price tag AND free bag of Jelly Bellys at the end! And it’s always interesting to see just what goes into what you’re eating. For instance, it was nice to see that Jelly Bellys are made with the actual ingredients they represent: not just artificial flavors!

After the tour we spent some time in the shop, checking out flavors, both delicious and completely gross.

We also picked up some big bags of Belly Flops, the beans that weren’t quite good enough in shape to make it into the stores, but definitely still good on flavor (and much cheaper!)

And I may have eaten way too many Jelly Bellys that morning. Just sayin’.

Sneak Peek of the Week

I spent Saturday in Milwaukee Wisconsin with some friends. We hit up the Jelly Belly Tour, saw a pre-season Brewers game, and stopped at a very special restaurant for dinner! More to come throughout the week, but for now here’s a sneak peek!
